TASC Instructor - Full Time



As the TASC Instructor/Navigator you will be responsible for working with students on a day to day basis to ensure their success in increasing their literacy/numeracy and completing and passing the TASC exam. You will also be responsible for assisting participants in becoming self-sufficient as well as monitoring student attendance and completing monthly reports which will ensure that students are on track in achieving their educational and career goals.  




  1. Recruit participants through outreach to inner-city youth and youth-serving agencies.
  2. Oversee program orientation for new participants and ensure that all intake paperwork and assessments are completed.
  3. Monitor participant attendance and progress and enforce program rules.
  4. Assist participants in achieving academic and employment success by coordinating effective and contextualized activities that improve their educational, leadership, personal development, and workforce skill competencies.
  5. Work with local employer partners to develop job positions in suited to applicant’s strengths, needs, and career goals.
  6. Remove barriers to active participation in education, training, and employment.
  7. Coordinate on-going mentoring opportunities for participants.
  8. Administer pre and post TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education).
  9. Plan, instruct, and supervise TASC class sessions.
  10. Maintain a classroom conducive to learning and facilitate successful participant engagement and learning.
  11. Evaluate student needs by assessing the skill level of each student and prepare lessons accordingly.
  12. Help participants acquire and obtain necessary academic skills to pass the TASC test.
  13. Provide individual academic instruction as needed.
  14. Communicate face-to-face communication with each youth on a monthly basis.
  15. Provide incentives for recognition and achievement.
  16. Submit accurate monthly and quarterly reports and monitor program to ensure it is on track for meeting goals.
  17. Attend and participate in Urban League functions and fundraising events.
  18. Perform such duties as the supervisor may assign.




  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in education, social work, or related field.
  • Certified to teach in NYS (preferable in one content area or special education).
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong commitment to youth leadership and empowerment.
  • Ability to relate well to youth from diverse backgrounds and to understand the barriers to success that less advantaged youth often face.
  • Ability to function effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple, competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to interface with external parties and community partners.
  • Must be customer service oriented.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Valid NYS driver’s license; clean driver’s abstract.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • Knowledge of community resources for youth and families is a plus.
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
