Summer Program Assistant-Think-Write-Speak


This is a seasonal staff position which involves the planning, development and administration for the League’s 6-week summer work program – Think, Write, Speak: ROC City Future Reporters. To address the lack of diversity in the journalism industry, the Urban League of Rochester has developed a culturally-sensitive youth program where participants will learn how to research, write, and present/perform various forms of news media to prepare them for careers in journalism. The program’s primary outcome is to develop, produce, and distribute a newspaper or a television broadcast to members of the Rochester community by utilizing participants’ communication, musical, and artistic skills.



Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Summer Program Assistant will:


  1. Provide assistance with implementing program activities;
  2. Assist with preparing narrative and numerical reports as required;
  3. Counsel participants as necessary to assess needs and identify/refer to appropriate support services as needed;
  4. Completer other job-related tasks as assigned by the supervisor or Vice President of Program Planning, Research and Evaluation;
  5. Attend Urban League of Rochester events.




  • Bachelor's degree in media communications/studies, writing, education, or related social science field OR within two years of completing Bachelor’s degree;
  • Experience working with various forms of media, including, but not limited to, radio, print, television, and internet media;
  • At least one year of experience working with high school youth;
  • Ability to relate to youth from diverse backgrounds and understand barriers to success that less advantaged youth often face
  • Ability to communicate information simply and clearly to individuals and groups;
  • Ability to form effective interpersonal work relationships with program participants and staff;
  • Ability to read, interpret, and enforce interpret program rules and regulations;
  • Ability to organize information and meet program deadlines;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing;
  • Willingness to learn, practice, and enforce the Urban League’s policies and procedures;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
