Mentor Counselor - ASA (Summer)


The Mentor Counselor will be responsible for helping to administer the program mentor component operations; plans and implements mentor program activities; experience in administrative capacity; knowledge of youth services program; and experience working with youth and families in an urban setting.



  1. Report to Director of Afterschool Academy
  2. Assist with recruiting volunteer mentors
  3. Works with Mentor Coordinator to complete duties
  4. Implement and leads mentoring activities planned with Mentor Coordinator
  5. Complete mentor training courses
  6. Maintain a mentoring caseload of students
  7. Meet weekly with each mentee to monitor their progress based on information in Individual College Development Plan (ICDP)
  8. Keep up-to-date, accurate complete records for each assigned case in Mentor Log 
  9. Identify and provide individual and group mentoring with assigned mentees for at least one hour per week
  10. Provide advocacy as needed on behalf of individuals and families receiving services
  11. Maintain a liaison with various community agencies to which individuals and families can be referred for services
  12. This includes follow-up and monitoring of referrals to ensure that services are being provided
  13. Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Director of Afterschool Academy
  14. Attend/support Urban League of Rochester events and fundraising functions


  • Bachelors degree in education, counseling, human services or social work and or related field required
  • Masters degree in education, counseling, human services or social work and or related field preferred
  • Experience working with youth in an educational setting, teaching experience is a plus
  • Proven ability to make presentations and lead trainings for groups
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to relate well to youth from diverse backgrounds and to understand the barriers to success that less advantaged youth often face
  • Ability to function effectively as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Knowledge of community resources for youth and families is a plus
  • Ability to interface with external parties and community partners
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple, competing tasks and demands
  • Must be customer service oriented
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus
